The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, provides a common strategy for prosperity for both people and the planet. At its core are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs, which represent an urgent call for action by all countries - poor, rich and middle-income - in a global partnership. By implementing these goals, we can create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change.
It is time for the EU and its Member States to align their policies to best support the delivery of global commitments, which include the 2030 UN SDGs. At the global level, we need to set clear milestones to measure the success of their implementation, and also best practice sharing of hard work, dialogue and diplomacy. Collaboration between governments, companies, civil society and the general public remains key in coping with the challenges the world is currently facing in order to ensure a better future for us all. The EU should adopt a leading role as a major economic player in implementing the SDGs and drive the progress while coping with the changing international political dynamics.
Institut Vert’s work on Global Challenges and SDGs focuses on the global impacts of the EU policies by supporting the development of health and environmental related policies that feed into the international developments and debates. In particular, we aim to ensure that through both its internal and external policies and actions EU will accomplish its commitments on the 2030 SDG agenda and global climate.
